Savannah College of Art & Design, Master of Architecture, Summa Cum Laude 2006

Principal and Studio Manager Jen Foster spearheaded the launch of Court Atkins Group’s second studio in Savannah’s Starland District, a neighborhood she knows well after relocating to Savannah 16 years ago to attend SCAD. At SCAD, Jen received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a master’s degree in architecture. Born and raised in St. Louis, MO, Jen worked in Colorado as a ranch hand and equestrian instructor before heading south with her husband, Rick, when her interests turned to architecture. Jen, Rick, and their daughter Elora are currently rehabbing their 1920 house in Ardsley Park. All three are fans of outdoor adventures like camping, hiking, rafting, and scuba diving.

Describe your process:  Designing a home is similar to solving a complex 3-dimensional puzzle. There are the functional components of the site and the floor plan, and the molding of those into a beautiful building in massing and detail. But the most important, special, and elusive part of it is that it should truly be a reflection of the homeowner, tailored to their personality, needs, and how they plan to live in the home over time. That is what make homes special and it can only be accomplished through good communication and getting to know your clients throughout the process.
