Our belief is architecture should be timeless, embracing a sense of history and tradition, while connecting seamlessly with the environment. We imprint our sustainable design philosophy on each project and are proud to be thoughtful stewards of the communities we impact.
Every Court Atkins Group project is tailored to reflect each client’s unique perspective and individual style. To achieve the client’s vision, our team carefully balances design, schedule and budget objectives. Above all, our goal is to continually listen to our clients, keeping the lines of communication open and fully responsive.
We engage clients in a personalized relationship by listening and then purposefully leading them through the process of designing home.
We strive to work within a client’s budget and schedule while bringing their vision of home to life. This objective begins with planning and analysis. The site and desired program are carefully designed to ensure environmental comfort and relaxation.
This phase of the design process allows us to explore the details of a clients in a methodical, comprehensive way. During schematic design phase, we determine the general room layout and overall character of the design. In the next design development phase, more technical information is given to the client for further commentary. Our clients are at the heart of the design process and included every step of the way.
We understand that looking at plans and elevations in 2D may not always be enough for clients to fully envision their home. An option to bring the project to life in 3D is offered as a useful visualization tool.
This phase will include the preparation of required documents and applications as well as attendance at required meetings to represent the client and guide design approvals. Many phases of the design process can seem overwhelming so we are glad to serve as champion for the client during drawing review meetings.
We facilitate the much-needed dialogue between the client and consultants regarding issues such as: structural engineering, mechanical/electrical/plumbing engineering, civil engineering, as well as other design professions like landscape, land planning, and interior design. Court Atkins Group maintains strong relationships with local consultants to integrate them seamlessly into the design process.
The final major phase of pre-construction services typically involves the preparation of the construction documents and general specifications. All details of the project except for selections are finalized at this phase. Clients are given the final review of the drawings and may begin to consider builders at this time.
The millwork phase includes basic custom millwork details, finishes, cabinetry design, and other interior details. Custom wood trim profiles add warmth and bring another level of ownership and pride to any residence. The final fit and finish create a lasting impression of the well-crafted spaces by Court Atkins Group.
We can help clients navigate the builder selection process which entails budgeting all aspects of the design then receiving quotes from qualified, recommended contractors. This process strongly considers the client budget and facilitates client-contractor introductions.
Upon finalizing all design details and selecting a builder, the permit set is produced. This document aids in attaining the city or county building permit and encompasses the clients’ full wish list. Although architectural design is complete at this stage, clients have the option of allowing us to visit the construction site and ensure the design is being fully realized and building codes honored.
Construction administration services attempts to keep the client informed of job site conditions as well as verify the project is built to standards. Professional services here include: site observation, coordination of change orders, answering design questions, and verifying project completion. Long distance clients can rest easy knowing that we are still hard at work on their future home!
Court Atkins Group offers a holistic approach to designing every aspect of home through our full-service interior design resource, 501 South Studio. Our in-house interiors team facilitates seamless coordination of interior additions and adjustments post permit release.

“…But then, after a while, you don't even notice the letters and all you see are the words." – Partner William Court, on the power of collaboration.
Ours is a team of designers, strategists, programmers and protagonists who arrive daily in our studio energized by various aspects of our project roster. Though we each bring our own unique brand of talent to the table, we’re devoted to a shared vision: the desire to enhance a sense of place, collaborate seamlessly with our industry partners and achieve harmony within the context of natural habitats.
Though our roots are all-American, our designs reflect the spirit of coastal lowcountry living, a composite of understated elegance, deliberate authenticity and graceful, timeless detail. These qualities frequently blend with regional influences and local traditions, while engaging the terrain and climate of respective home environments.
Thankfully our clients continue to remind us why we’re passionate about our work. We welcome the challenge of interpreting their perspectives on home, workplace and neighborhood. Listening to their stories has been our priority since we opened our doors 13 years ago. How do they see their futures evolving? Who will share their lifetime journeys? What are the milestones they celebrate?
Each client’s personal narrative becomes a catalyst for creating custom floor plans and enduring spaces that are stylish and modern, yet comfortable and intimate. We add state-of-the-art conveniences and if desired, recommendations by our full-service interior design team. Then with the earlier quote in mind…letters become words, and a house becomes home.

Bud and Shirley Mingledorff, Myrtle Island
"We wanted a new house that looked 200 years old, while taking every advantage possible of our building site. The creativity and functionality of their design was exactly what we wanted and it has received rave reviews by all who have seen the finished product. If we were building again, we would not consider using anyone else.”
Mike and Jeanette Davis, Wexford Plantation
“From the beginning, they listened to our wants and needs, putting everything we were looking for into our house while keeping it within budget. They were very professional and detail oriented and worked well with the Architectural Standards Committee. It was a pleasure working with James, William and Kathy. We highly recommend their firm.”
Bob and Diane Cibulsky, Belfair
“They asked numerous questions to more fully understand our goals …they listened and then provided easy-to-understand recommendations for both internal and external designs based on their many experiences…with their valuable input, we selected options that we would have easily overlooked …always available to respond to any question on an immediate basis, thus eliminating any design or construction delays.”
Toby and Donna Buck, Brays Island
"…The professional calm nature that William maintained in coordinating the construction portion of the building worked smoothly for all parties … assisting us with communication with the builder, developing a reasonable timeline and finding alternative suppliers of services to compress our time and associated cost …seamless building process we experienced on this project.“
John M. Lord, Jr., Brays Island
“We needed an architectural firm that would work closely with us and help us through what is a very complex process …The principals are very much involved with every client throughout the process...the entire experience of building a new home was far more fun and stress free than we might have expected, based on tales from friends and acquaintances"
Lamar and Alice Nix, Bull Point
“From the initial meetings Court Atkins seemed to have an exceptional grasp of the design (we wanted) and quickly generated conceptual drawings …always most helpful in guiding us to making decisions; they were extremely flexible in making any tweaks that we initiated "
Stuart and Cathy Malone, Palmetto Bluff
“We have used Court Atkins as our architects for two projects. We loved the job they did on our first and could not find any reason to look elsewhere for the second. They listened to our ideas and suggestions. They made changes and improvements that were better than we could have expected. We consider them the best architects in the area.”
Jim and Trish Riordan, Bull Point
“The Court Atkins team remained committed to our project and when the inevitable of too much house and too little budget became apparent, they worked with us to get back on track without any problems. We would wholeheartedly recommend the Court Atkins team. They were an extremely professional creative team, easy to work with and exceptionally responsive to us, their clients. And yes, we love our new home.”
Hub and Georgia Green, Belfair
“In building our new home, the Court/Atkins team gave us their experience, professionalism, and insight to exactly what we were looking for in building our new home. Their ideas, and incorporating them with ours, made the process very easy.“
Joe and Anne Jarboe
“Court Atkins did an excellent job of working with us to develop the spaces we wanted into a design that takes full advantage of our site and view. They were fully professional, responsive, and extremely pleasant to work with. And we love the end result!”
Bill and Susan Nimmer, Berkeley Hall
“As this was our first time designing and building our family home, we could not have been happier that we found the Court Atkins team. Working with William, James, and their wonderful staff was a pleasure. Professional, creative, forward thinking, and respectful of the land and surrounding environment that our home would reside in, is what set them apart. They were very open to our input, and their attention to detail was exceptional. It was a joy to design with them.”
A. M. (Mac) Mellor, Palmetto Bluff
“Court Atkins Architects wisely took some time last year to prepare a site study and preliminary design that met our specifications for a carriage house in South Wilson at Palmetto Bluff. The result was stunning. I wrote William Court, “I must say I am quite struck by your design and yesterday asked the general contractor to work directly with you for preparing the corresponding construction cost estimates.”
Alan & Jo Gambill, Colleton River
“We found the entire team at Court Atkins, led by William and James, to be most professional, helpful and easy to work with. Our entire experience was most enjoyable! William and James listened carefully to our verbal input and appropriately considered two binders of documentation we provided them regarding our design philosophy and vision for our new home. As a result, the home they designed was "our home", not simply "theirs" as can be the case with some architects..... although they were certainly most helpful in guiding us and helping us avoid serious design errors. Their placement of the home on our unique site was outstanding, optimizing all possible views. We recommend Court Atkins without qualification!“
